Ukrainian educational system recognises a child’s uniqueness as the main object and value of the learning process. But educational reforms are not possible without historical analysis and scientific analogies. Modern pedagogical science studies views and practices of brilliant teachers of the past, who took an active part in the building of the national Ukrainian school. Today their works keep having a great impact on Ukrainian pedagogy. The purpose of the article is a retrospective analysis of the basic pedology principles and covering the pedagogical heritage of Ukrainian such pedologists as Viktor Prototopov, Stepan Ananin, Yakiv Mamontov, Hryhorii Kostiuk, Oleksandr Zaluzhnyi, Ivan Sokolianskyi. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of Yakiv Chepiga’s legacy as he was a famous Ukrainian teacher and public figure. There are analyzed the main guidelines of pedology science which used experiment, testing and observation. The issues of pedology destruction and its supporters’ persecution are considered in the article. Emphasis is put on the review of Ukrainian pedologists’ works of the 20s, 30s of the XX century, in particular Yakiv Chepiga’s activity.
