Summary

XXI Century constantly puts new challenges for humans. The usual process of reading acquires a new, strategic significance. This is due to increased availability of information and the related requirement to quick processing of it. Psychophysiologists have recognized reading as one of the most difficult processes, because during this process simultaneously several mechanisms are working – visual, verbal, motor, auditory and semantic. In the field of pedagogy, reading is also updated. According to scientists, methodologists and teachers modern students prefer to work with media texts – a combination of verbal text and aids: visualization, audio, video. This format of texts is intended to be used in elementary schools of New Ukrainian school. But it is the printed text that requires the above mentioned complex mental activity. Therefore, the obvious problem is the search of working methods with linear text, effective both in primary, secondary and high school. In the 1960s, Vasyl Sukhomlynskyi developed and implemented such method. In practice it is called the method of conscious reading. Testing the effectiveness of the teacher’s experience requires implementation with the understanding the theoretical basis of its main components in the context of modern educational changes. As for the popular scientific literature, it is appropriate to use conscious reading in the education of innovative formats – STREAM-STEAM-STEM-STEMM. The parents’ role as subjects of the modern educational process is also important in the implementation of Vasyl Sukhomlynsky’s methodology.
